Day 7: Hippies, Hammocks, and Holy Hell That’s Some Good Food!

Welcome to Earth Lodge, a paradise in paradise! Getting to this place was half the fun. Me and Ozvaldo got up at 10am and made the hike over to Old Town Outfitters to catch the “shuttle” up to Earth Lodge. After loading up in the bed of a small pick up truck we made a 25 minute journey straight up the mountains and into the highland communities above Antigua. On the ride there me and Ozvaldo made some friends. One of the people was a bartender at Earth Lodge and the other happened to be an Aggie. Now, what are the chances of there being a Longhorn and Aggie in the back of a rickety old truck up a mountain headed towards what I would soon see was a hippie haven? Well, the world gets even smaller. Turns out the Aggie, who was sweet as can be and name is Sam, worked with my sister back in San Antonio! MIND BLOWN…WORLD SMALL. After getting dropped off and a small downhill hike to Earth Lodge I spotted a bunch of barefoot people laying out in the grass looking half starved…we were here, Earth Lodge. Now this place was pristine, green, and my kind of scene! Breath taking views, of all the surrounding volcanoes and more avocado trees than I could count. After catching some BBQ for lunch at the bar we all studied under the watchful eyes of the volcanoes and later made our way to the hammocks for some rest. Laying in the hammock was one of those moments where you just think how insignificant you are. Looking at the massive volcanoes you realize how small we are and it puts you back in your place. It gave me a sense of respect for the culture, a culture that values the land and nature just as much as their own lives. Yeah, this is where I belong- okay enough with that deep inner thought shit. As beautiful and amazing as the day had been we had to go back and after a dark drive in the back of the same truck, this time with drunken Europeans, we made our way back home.
